We've been meaning to post about this for a while, we took a trip down to Hollywood last week because a short that Kristi worked on was up for a Student Emmy Award. So we drove down Friday for the award ceremony and screening over the weekend and drove back on Monday.

We got down there in time to do some site seeing on Friday, and Kristi had never been down Hollywood Boulevard and our hotel was only a block away, so we went and saw the walk of fame, and the oddities that are Hollywood Blvd.

Inspector 42 is the name of the short. Kristi was listed along with the film in the program.

Now before we continue, I've got to inform all of you about something. When you watch the Academy Awards, you can almost always figure out what film will win Best Picture because the editor of that film will win Best Film Editing. When making a film you write the best script you can, you shoot it the best you can, but eventually the edit is what tells the story. So deservedly, a film that wins Best Picture is presented by a superb edit.

So Inspector 42 was up for Best Drama and Best Director.

Kristi's thrilled. A great film by a great group of people, and most of all, a fantastic editor.

To make the night even better, Nathan won the Directing Award! Paris Barclay, producer of successful TV shows like NYPD Blue, and director of several episodes of successful television shows like Glee, NCIS: L.A., The Mentalist, CSI, Monk, and Lost, gave a very flattering introduction to the award. It was pretty exciting.

I thought I'd post some cell phone pictures from our adventures at the Hare Krishna Festival of Colors. It's a peace promoting event in which everyone hurls colored chalk at each other. Kristi's first attack was a blast of pink in the face from a total stranger. We progressively got more and more colorful as the day went on. It was a blast.

So we actually did it. We shot out a feature in a week. Kristi is syncing sound as we speak.

We want to say a special thank you to everyone that helped us out so much. Obviously Mom and Dad did a ton for us during this entire process. Thank you so much for everything. Thanks to Phil, Kelli, Dallin, and Mary for coming out and being extras. Definitely to the Dollys and Hansens for letting us use their maze and for the burgers and hot chocolate. There were so many people that made this a really good experience for all of us. So thank you all.

I thought I would throw up some stills so you could see what the footage is looking like so far. I did a quick contrast and color pass with Photoshop, so this is not what it's going to look like in the end, but it still looks pretty nice.

Sci-Fi Stole My Dragon

Take a close look at this poster and see if you find anything familiar about it.

Yes indeed. A $3M movie gave their international rights to the same company that carried Dragon Hunter. They didn't like the way the actual dragon in the movie looked so they decided to just use ours, and put a different head on it.

It's undeniably the exact same body. Their dragon looks like a giant flaming sting ray, so I can see why they would want to trade up, but they could have asked.

Even the way that the texture under the arm doesn't quite blend seamlessly.

Here's a side view of the texture and shape of the dragon's neck. We've been robbed.

I met with our distributor yesterday about this. We'll see what happens in the future.

I'll post about something cooler soon. Kristi and I have been insanely busy and very tired gearing up for the shoot in November. So until things calm down again, here's a screaming, angry, Halloween pepper.

I was looking through old pictures today and I remember that I went to the MTC on Phil's BIRTHDAY! So while this is still one of my favorite family photos, it carries a little more meaning with that added context. He's a good kid and a good sport giving us all a windy happy birthday wave.

Vegas was fun. It was definitely a LOT of driving and it would have been nice to have the money and time to go to a few shows. But we found a lot of fun things to do. One of the adventures we had was at the World of Coca-Cola where they offer "Tastes from Around the World", a tray of beverages made by Coke from different places around the world.

We started tasting the different flavors and things were going just fine.

I know I keep posting DH stuff, but since it came out in the UK I keep finding stuff and it's really surreal for me. So today I found a site that is having a contest to win Dragon Hunter DVDs. Dragon Hunter came out today in the UK. Retail price is a whopping $30. But you can find it online for around $16. I think that's still more than it's going to be sold for in the US. I guess we'll find out on July 28th. Anyway, check out this awesome poster from our lovely friends in the UK.

Dragon Hunter in the UK

I promise I'll stop posting about Dragon Hunter someday, but it's a big part of my every day work life right now and as soon as I wrap it up, we'll be in the middle of Dragon Hunter 2, so it seems like it will be hanging around for a while. Anyway, thought I might mention that the UK will be releasing Dragon Hunter before the US will. Release date for the UK is May 11th. Their poster is a little more action packed than the US version, but not quite as awesome as Japan (but I guess I'm partial to seeing the title translated into another language.) In the UK it's apparently worth like $30 and they think that Brad Johnson is the star. I looked into it and IMDb also seems to think that Brad is the star. I couldn't figure it out until I realized that he is credited as "Hunter" and the movie is called "Dragon Hunter". It's like thinking Bruce Willis' name is "Die Hard" instead of John McClane. Whatever. Here's their action packed poster:

We FINALLY have a date for the US DVD release. It will be coming to DVD on July 28th. Yes, that's our anniversary. Irony only begins to describe it.

So my Google alert has alerted me now to about 50 places online where you can watch Dragon Hunter. The whole movie. I never thought anyone would really consider it worth pirating, but I guess there are some really desperate people out there. It's a different aspect ratio, so if I thought about it hard enough, I'm sure I could narrow down what country it's coming from, but I don't think there's anything I can do about it. Hopefully sales won't be damaged by too much.

In other news, I'm glad the flying cat had a warm welcome. It was the first attempt at something I hope to continue doing for quite some time. Each Monday I will be posting a picture that I have found to be particularly humorous or awesome. My dream is to restore hope to Monday experiencers around the world. Next week will follow a similar theme to this week. Hope to see you then.

Fit For The Kingdom

I thought I'd share something good that has come from Mormon Cinema. Personally, I find myself disappointed with the majority of the films that are being created under this recently created umbrella we call Mormon Cinema, but from time to time there is a little glimmer of hope in this "genre" or category, or whatever you'd like to call it.

A few years ago, 2005 I believe, a documentary film entitled New York Doll was released. It follows the life of a remarkably humble man with an insane past as a famous rock star in the band The New York Dolls. He happens to be Mormon now and has a very strong testimony. The film captivated me.

Now, New York Doll is a remarkable film and I would recommend it to anyone, but I'm actually writing this blog about something else. There is an on going initiative at BYU called Fit For The Kingdom. It's a series of short documentaries about normal people who happen to be Mormon. Some are hilarious, some are very sad, but they're all heart warming and edifying. Here's the link:

Delta airlines also offers encouraging words from time to time.

But one of the most interesting things that I learned is that one of the restrooms in the Wilkinson Center on BYU campus now saves 40,000 gallons of water per urinal per day.

Or so said the plaque next to this water-less/hands free device.

This was my first time on campus since I left the place in December. It was also the first time I had ever seen one of these things. But things went smoothly and I proceeded to the sink to wash my hands when I saw this:

I leave for a 2 months and everything changes. BYU's gone hands free. But at what price? I began to wonder when I turned to dry my hands and saw this...

The Dyson AIR BLADE. There were no paper towels. The instructions merely direct one to place one's hands inside and then pull them back out. It didn't make any sense. WHAT'S AN AIRBLADE?! Could this be BYU's punchline to a sick "hands free" joke? I felt like I was trapped with wet hands in the temple of doom. I approached the device desperately searching my mind for the key to understanding the one thing standing between me and dry hands. I mutter to myself, "The penitent man...only the penitent man..." But my thoughts are hampered with doubt. What about Indiana? He didn't just kneel. He kind of did a kneel/tuck/roll manuver. Who prays like that? Since when did a vacuum company make restroom stuff? Am I on candid camera? Candid camera in a restroom? What's the world coming to?

Before I knew it, I was standing above the vacuum company torture device. I hadn't thought of any way around it, so I thought I'd just put my left hand in and see what happened.

Sure enough, a thin blade of pressurized air shot from both sides of the top of the device. I pulled my hand out and it was dry. It was really quite amazing. No mortal wounds. But I did check other select restrooms in the Wilk and Library, but they haven't received the same upgrade. I'm still waiting to see what pathagen or tracking chip was implanted into my body after that experience, but nothing yet. I'll keep you posted.

Well, I realized how long it has really been since I've updated and a lot has happened. Dragon Hunter finally premiered and it was a wonderful event. Steve and I were holding each others hands so tightly throughout the movie but it went really well! Things are moving a long for us and now I only have about 7 weeks until I am totally done with my college career! I can hardly believe it, but I cannot wait. Last weekend I was very privileged to meet the Shimek side of the family and they are such wonderful people. I felt completely accepted and loved as soon as I got off of the airplane and Courtney came up to me, gave me a big hug, and said, "Oh cute new cousin!" It was wonderful to just be together, even if it was for a short time and I hope that I get to see a lot more of the Shimek family as time goes on. I had never been to Texas before and I decided it was a very beautiful place. Other than that we're just working all of the time, but I think that is fairly normal for most people. :) So there's a quick update on us and I'm sure Steve will add something soon as well (or maybe not but one of us will).

STEVE GRADUATED! He officially graduated December 19th but grades came in yesterday and he passed all of his classes! I am so proud of him and so grateful that we are done with school on his side of things! So he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Media Studies and he will be walking with me in April (they don't do a December ceremony). Things are looking up for this new year! We have a lot of things already on our plates but I think that I will have an easy semester at school and that we will have a lot of opportunities come our way. Happy New Year All!

I just wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! The holidays are just wonderful because we get to see family and spend time together. Instead of just running back and forth after seeing people for one day, we get to actually spend quality time together (like playing "The Minister's Cat" with the Shimeks). It's been such a fun holiday so far. I haven't had any work or school, which has been delightful, and it has really given me the chance to pay attention to family. I also can't wait to talk to my brother. He's in Brazil on his mission and on Christmas we will all get the chance to talk to him and I can't wait! It's been more than a year since I've talked to him and I know he will have a hard time speaking in English because he hasn't in probably eight months but that doesn't matter, it will be nice just to hear his voice. We are also going to California to see my family down there and spend some time with my immediate family and I am excited to just have a relaxing holiday all together. Oh and of course one of my best friends is getting married on January 2nd so that is going to be absolutely wonderful because they are perfect for each other. A little hectic but so much fun! Anyway Merry Christmas to everyone!

The Longest Day...

Today has seemed like an exceptionally long day, perhaps it was because I was working on the most boring project ever. Well actually the project overall is cool but what I was doing was not. I just need some time to relax and let my brain rest and so I thought I would enter the world wide web and vegetate for a while. I know it seems strange to be sitting here writing, but I have always found writing to be very relaxing, somewhat like reading a good book. When you're done you kind of have an overall feel of relaxation even if you can't remember all of the details of what you just accomplished. Anyway I'm sorry if this is sounds a little out of it, I'm not very good at hiding my tiredness. Steve and I are doing well-Thanks dad for wishing us good luck on our finals, we really need it this time. As previously mentioned we are amidst the field of finals that manages to creep in around this time of year, but things are looking up, it seems as if we will actually pass all of our classes this semester. Now some of our grades hinge on finals, which I really don't think is fair if you've been going to the class all semester and doing the homework, but I am pretty confident that if we study up these next few days we can blow them out of the water. Other than that we've just been working. I've been slipping in as many hours here and there as I can and we're just doing our normal thing...nothing much to report. Sorry this wasn't a very exciting entry, I guess I didn't really have much to say, but it was relaxing (mission accomplished). I think now I will take a short nap and then get up and start prepping for finals. I have work tomorrow so I won't be able to do as much studying as I wanted tomorrow, so I must do it tonight. Ah well, thus is life. I hope everyone else is doing well, and good luck with life this next week!

THANKSGIVING!

I don't really know what I want to say, but I can't wait for next week to arrive. On the Barney side we get to see my Aunt PJ who was just sworn in as a clerk for the Justice Attorney for the Supreme Court for the state of Washington and I we haven't seen her since the wedding so I'm really excited to see her and all of the Barney clan. On the Shimek side I am so excited to see the family and play with the kids (I'm sure they've grown up even more since a few weeks ago when we were there). This is my favorite time of year, because you don't have to make excuses to take work off and see your family, everyone knows Christmas and Thanksgiving are off limits (most of the time anyway). I'm really grateful for two wonderful families that I feel so comfortable with and love dearly. Anyway I'm excited for this upcoming holiday season and all of the fun we get to have! (and that Steve is graduating in practically four weeks!! YAY!) Love you all and I can't wait to see you!

I thought I'd post some pictures from our one day Disneyland trip. And thanks to Mary's genius, I can post some videos from my phone. They're pretty low res, but still fun.
The trip wasn't complete until Kristi got her popcorn and I got my Mickey ice cream that evening.
It just feels so good to sink your teeth into him and crush his little skull.

Six Quirks

I've been tagged by Kelli to name six quirks about myself, I hope you're all still my friends after this.

1. I never really learned how to ride a bike. The first time I rode I ran into a parked car (well I more tapped it and fell off the bike into the grass). That was it for me, I've only been on like one since and it also didn't go well. (Steve keeps saying he's going to make me learn out in our cul-de-sac)

2. I have a serious phobia of people touching my neck. I figure it's because I've had to get echocardiograms on my neck since I was little because of my heart problem and they push down on that soft spot on your neck right below your adams apple. Even thinking about it gives me the chills. But because of that anything resembling people getting hurt on their neck wigs me out!

3. I absolutely love ice cold water, and I mean I will drink it until I am ill. When I was little I actually did make mysef sick off of it.

4. Whenever Steve is gone late at night I watch one of three things until I fall asleep: Hook, Ratatouille, or Donald Duck Cartoons. They’re my comfort movies.

5. I am really bad at talking to people on the phone, maybe this is another phobia of mine but when I get on the phone with people I get all tongue tied. Face-to-face talking is absolutely fine, but phone talking…So if you ever have a very short phone conversation with me it’s not because I don’t like you, it’s because I feel so awkward on the phone. Sometimes I won’t pick up the phone if someone caught me off-guard by calling because I don’t know what to say. It’s ridiculous and I need to get over it, but it’s one of those quirks.

6. Hmm…number 6…oh I don’t like the feeling of dirt, chalk, or flour on my hands. It gives me the chills. And thus it is very hard to garden, write on the board, or bake anything, but I do it anyway. (Sorry this last one was kind of lame)

Forever Strong

Tonight we went to the premiere of Forever Strong, the new Ryan Little movie. It is actually based on the Highland Rams a high school that my high school (Skyline) used to play in sports and stuff, a rival if you will. We always were hearing about how great the Highland rugby team was but since we didn't have a rugby team at our school we never really new much about them. Anyway the movie was pretty good. It had nice themes, but if you have a hard time watching contact sports, don't go see this movie because it is the harshest of them all. Either way it was a lot of fun, Steve and I finally got out of the house (even though he was working-he was doing a story on it for KBYU). Anyway I guess I just wanted to throw that out there (I don't know who or what would latch on, but there it is). I hope all is well with everyone else!

Life

You can imagine who wrote our first post. Life is a little bit crazy. We're finishing Dragon Hunter by October 12th and right now Steve is in a meeting talking about color correction and the finished product (and foreign deliverables-which is always a mess dealing with pal and all sorts of other things that foreign territories require). We are doing well in school (at least we go to all of our classes and do the assignments-so far [after all it is only the third week of school]). And as of today I am officially graduating in April (Steve took care of his last week and he is officially going to graduate in December, barring any unforeseen F's on his transcript-which I will not let him get!) I am juggling three jobs but once October begins I will be only working for one company that month, then we'll see what happens in November. The Message is going pretty well, Steve is working with one of our friend's Katy Baldwin on the script and we're working to get a really good producer on, who when we talked to him last week sounded interested. So that's a quick update on what we're doing right now-work as usual. :)
